The brief

Step 1 of 5

Designs: Crest 2A and crest 2B, one medallion each
Size: About 4 by 4 cm
Colour: Taken from MINDEF's reference images

At Additive Inn, our 3D printing studio in Singapore, we made two crest medallions for MINDEF. MINDEF needed two versions of its Digital and Intelligence crest, designs 2A and 2B, turned from flat artwork into raised pieces about 4 cm across.

Design and prototyping

We modelled each crest in 3D from MINDEF's artwork files: the lion and tiger, crescent, globe, crossed swords, laurel and ribbon became raised layers on a round base, ready to print.

Production

Step 3 of 5

Each medallion was printed in SLA resin and cleaned of supports. We sanded them, primed them and gave them a gloss black base coat, ready for the metal finish.

Painting and finishing

Step 4 of 5

Chrome silver went over the black and was polished by hand. The medallions were then painted gold, with the shield and ribbon in red and the crescent, stars and lettering in white.

The final build

Step 5 of 5

MINDEF got both crest designs as finished medallions: gold over chrome silver, a red shield with a white crescent and stars, and the red DIGITAL & INTELLIGENCE ribbon.
