Transparent 3D Printed Parts?
Transparent parts have always been a challenge in traditional manufacturing, but with 3D printing, and a couple of related processes, it’s possible to get genuinely see-through results. The catch is that “transparent” means something different for each method.
Which process for which clarity?
It depends on how clear the part needs to be and what shape it is. Here are the four routes we use, side by side. Compare the clarity first, then the shape each one is limited to:
For a true 3D shape, SLA clear resin gives the best all-round clarity. Here’s how we take it from translucent to crystal-clear.
Getting a crystal-clear finish from SLA
An SLA part comes off the printer translucent, not clear. Three finishing steps close the gap:
- Step 1: Sanding. Wet-sand the surface through progressively finer grits to remove the visible layer lines and surface imperfections.
- Step 2: Polishing. Polish with a compound (by wheel or by hand) to erase the fine sanding scratches and bring back the resin’s natural shine.
- Step 3: Clear coat. Apply a clear lacquer to smooth the surface and add a protective layer, then buff to a final gloss.
A truly clear result still takes some trial and error: part thickness, print settings and resin quality all affect how transparent the finished piece ends up.

Can 3D printers make truly clear transparent parts?
Not as printed, because every printing process leaves some light scattering. SLA clear resin is the closest, producing a translucent piece you can see through but not crystal-clear. To get optical-grade clarity, we wet-sand the SLA part through 5 grit stages then apply a UV-cure clear coat. The result is near-glass clarity but takes manual labour.
Why are transparent 3D prints cloudy?
FDM transparent prints are cloudy because of layer-line light scattering, where every layer interface refracts light slightly. SLA clear resin is smoother but still scatters at the build orientation lines. Polishing or applying a clear topcoat fills these micro-features and dramatically improves clarity. For perfect optical parts, casting from a printed master beats printing direct.
How do you finish transparent 3D prints?
Our process: print in SLA clear resin → wash and post-cure → wet-sand through 400, 800, 1500, 2000, 3000 grit → polish with plastic polish → apply UV-cure clear topcoat. Total finishing time is 2 to 6 hours per part depending on size. The result rivals polycarbonate clarity at small scales.
