A good birthday gift in Singapore is one that could only be for them: their name engraved on something they use, or a small figurine made from their photos. These birthday gift ideas come in three budgets, with picks for her, him, your wife or husband and the milestone birthdays, plus how far ahead to order, because a personal gift takes longer than next-day delivery.

Start with the person, not the shop

Three questions narrow it down faster than an hour of browsing.

• How well do you know them? The closer you are, the more personal the gift can be. A colleague gets something useful; your sister gets the in-joke.
• What do they already have too much of? Mugs, candles, another bottle of wine. If they’ve been given it five times, skip it.

• It won’t feel like a grand gesture, so write a proper card to go with it.

• A Colour Print Mini Me, 10 or 15 cm. A figurine of them, machine-printed in four colours, arriving in a gift box. It takes about a week once you approve the 3D preview, so it’s the quickest figurine we make.
• An engraved keepsake. A titanium flask with their name on it, or a layered acrylic award on oak, about 22 cm tall, for whatever they’re famous for at home.

Its honest limits:

• A Colour Print figurine is printed in four colours rather than painted by hand, so it’s simpler than the painted styles below.
• Engraving is one tone: the mark itself. If the design needs full colour, it’s printed on instead.

S$150 and up: made for them

This is where a birthday gift becomes the one they talk about. A hand-painted Mini Me is sculpted from your photos, and you approve the artwork and a 3D preview before anything is made. Then it’s printed, painted by hand and mounted on its base in our Bendemeer studio.

• Animated is stylised and cheerful.
• Realistic is the closest likeness of our Mini Me styles.
• Couples, families and pets. Each extra person or pet joins the same scene, up to eight figures.

Its honest limits:

• It takes about four weeks once you approve the 3D preview, so it’s a plan-ahead gift.
• It’s a likeness in a stylised form, not a photograph: think 3D caricature rather than portrait.
• Each extra person costs about three-quarters of a whole figurine, objects in the scene add a little more, and three or more people start at the 20 cm size. You see the total before you pay.

Birthday gifts for her, him, your wife or husband

Most birthday searches name the person, and the advice is the same each time: aim for something only you would think of.

• For her. Something that shows you’ve been listening: the thing she mentioned months ago, or a gift made of her and the people or pets she loves.
• For your boyfriend or girlfriend. Choose a shared moment over an object: your first trip, or the pet you adopted together. A printed figurine of the two of you takes about a week once you approve the preview.
• For your wife or husband. Shared history beats price. A figurine of the two of you at your wedding, or on a trip you both still talk about, does what a bought gift can’t.

• 21st. Friends often pool their money for one bigger gift. A hand-painted figurine of the birthday girl or boy is one a whole group can give together, and everyone gets to argue over the pose.
• 30th and 40th. Mark what they’ve built: the career, the home, the family. A figurine of them with their partner and children, or an engraved keepsake with the date, fits better than another night out.

Add the time you’ll take to reply to the artwork and preview rounds, which move as fast as you do. Then choose how it arrives: courier to their address with a gift box and a note, or free collection from our Bendemeer studio.
