The finished enclosure from the front: a grey cockpit-style control panel standing on a ribbed matte black base under a clear acrylic cover
The enclosure with the cover off: the grey control panel tilted back on its black support, above the ribbed black base
With the cover off: the panel leans back on its printed support, so the labels face the person using it.

This is a display stand and dust cover for a cockpit-style control panel, made for Tony Chen. The panel sits tilted back on a matte black 3D printed stand, and a clear acrylic cover drops over the whole thing to keep the dust off.

The brief

Tony brought us the panel itself, with no 3D file for it. He wanted a stand that holds it at a comfortable viewing angle, readable sitting or standing, and a removable clear cover. The panel's electronics and any wall mounting were not part of the job.

How we made it

We measured the panel by hand and designed the stand around it. The panel leans back so its labels face the viewer and catch less glare from overhead lights. Tony handed the panel over on 20 July and approved the design two days later, at the first revision. Fabrication was planned at three to five working days from there, and the panel stayed with us the whole time so we could check the fit.

The stand is four printed parts in matte black PLA: two halves of the base and two parts that make the angled support. Splitting it keeps each print clean and the walls strong. The joints interlock and are glued, and 6 mm metal rods run through the base as dowels. The base walls have a fine ribbed texture, which hides the line where the two halves meet. The 3 mm clear acrylic cover sits on a ledge around the top of the base, with no screws or clips.

The result is a panel that reads as a finished display piece rather than a loose part on a desk.
