What we brought

  1. What we can do

Colour in the plastic, not on it

Shy Guy's red robe, white mask and blue feet, and the helmet's black visor and orange shell, are each their own filament.

  2. How we look after you

    A clean line between colours

Where one colour meets the next, the edge is simply where one filament ends, with no masking or paint to chip.

  3. What you get

    Straight onto the shelf

Printed in colour, they need no painting. Groot comes in plain white, ready for primer and paint if you want it.

The brief

Step 1 of 4

Shy Guy
A small desk figurine in red, white, black and blue, from the filament
Daft Punk helmet
A fan-made helmet model with a black visor and an orange shell, from the filament
Groot
A large seated figurine in white PLA, unpainted

At Additive Inn, our 3D printing studio in Singapore, we FDM print character pieces for desks and shelves. This page brings together three separate jobs, two of them printed in their own colours with no paint at all.

Production

Step 2 of 4

Shy Guy was printed in four filaments: red for the hood and robe, white for the mask and hood trim, black for the eyes, mouth and belt, and blue for the feet. The helmet's visor dome was printed in black and the shell around it in orange. Groot was printed in white PLA, keeping the bark lines along his arms and legs, the leaves on his head and the thin raised fingers.

Finishing

Step 3 of 4

No masking, spraying or painting. On Shy Guy the colour edges around the mask, eyes and belt are where one filament meets the next, and the fine print lines are left showing. The helmet's black dome sits inside the orange shell, which wraps around its base and up both sides, so the two colours meet on one clean edge. Groot was left in plain white, ready to display as he is or to take primer and paint later.

The final build

Step 4 of 4

Three finished pieces, ready for a desk or a shelf: Shy Guy with his arms up and mouth open, a two-tone helmet, and a big, cheerful Groot.

Shy Guy from the front.

Shy Guy

A desk-sized Shy Guy whose hood, mask, belt and feet need no paint. The round eyes, open mouth and raised arms read clearly on a small figure.

Daft Punk helmet

A fan-made model of a Daft Punk helmet: a black visor framed by the orange shell and its side panels. Fine print layers follow the curve of the dome.

Groot

A large seated Groot with his legs out, smiling and throwing a rock-on sign. He sits on a desk taller than the plant pots beside him.
