The brief
Step 1 of 4
- Rolls
- A spoked wheel on a ring of rollers
- Turns
- A fork that swivels on its base
- Stops
- A foot pedal with a pink brake catch
- Fixes
- A black base with screw holes
At Additive Inn, our 3D printing studio in Singapore, we made a swivel castor wheel in plastic that rolls, swivels and brakes like a bought one, on a base that screws in place.
Production
Step 2 of 4
We printed every part on our FDM printers: the black wheel, pedal and base, the grey fork and rollers, and the pink hub cap and brake catch. The open spokes are printed in, so the wheel needs no moulds.
Build and assembly
Step 3 of 4
We put the parts together by hand: the rollers in a ring inside the wheel, the wheel on the fork under its pink cap, the pedal on its pin and the fork onto its base.
The final build
Step 4 of 4
The finished castor stands on its black base, its spoked wheel turning on the grey rollers, with the pedal ready to brake it.
