Engineering trophy for DSO National Laboratories

An appreciation trophy from DSO National Laboratories' EN Division: ENGINEERING in blue, six abbreviations in white and a gold plate thanking the division's head.

Client
DSO National Laboratories
Presented to
Dr Tan Guan Leng, SD(EN), 2015 to 2023

What we brought

  1. What we can do

    Lettering that reads in layers

ENGINEERING stands tall in blue, while six white abbreviations sit at different depths and overlap from the side.

  2. How we look after you

You see every angle before we print

Renders from five angles showed the layout, colours and plate wording before anything was printed.

  3. What you get

A thank-you from the whole division

The plate thanks Dr Tan for his leadership and guidance, from the whole EN Division.

Use
Appreciation award from the EN Division

At Additive Inn, our 3D printing studio in Singapore, we made an engineering trophy for DSO National Laboratories. Its EN Division wanted to thank Dr Tan Guan Leng for his leadership from 2015 to 2023, with the division's own abbreviations on the trophy.

Design and prototyping

Step 2 of 5

We modelled the trophy in 3D and showed each revision from five angles. Revision 0 had ENGINEERING standing in orange in front of the abbreviations, loosely scattered on a flat deck, with the plate wording on the curved front.

    Revision 0, with orange lettering.

  2. Revision 1

ENGINEERING turned blue and moved onto a raised back, the abbreviations sat in neat rows and the plate wording changed.

  3. Revision 2

We clustered the abbreviations so they overlap at different depths, the layout we printed.

Production

Step 3 of 5

We 3D printed the parts in three colours: the base in black, ENGINEERING in blue and the abbreviations in white, each abbreviation as one piece with its letters joined at the foot.

Step 4 of 5

ENGINEERING went into a slot along the raised back. The abbreviations were set across the deck at different depths, and the brushed gold plate, lettered in black, was fitted to the curved front.

The final build

Step 5 of 5

From the front, ENGINEERING reads clearly over the six abbreviations; from the side, the abbreviations overlap in layers above the plate.
