A custom wall panel that carries two universal power sockets and a light switch, with the panel itself 3D printed to fit them. The client needed a mounting plate sized exactly around off-the-shelf electrical fittings, so we measured the real parts, reverse-engineered the openings and printed a panel they drop straight into. The finish is a deep matte black with a fine texture that hides the print lines and reads like a moulded fascia.
Built around real fittings
The trick with a part like this is the fit. A socket or a switch has to sit flush and hold firm, which means every opening has to match the fitting to the millimetre. We measured the universal sockets and the switch module, reverse-engineered their mounting dimensions and modelled the panel around them, so each component clips into place with no slop and no gaps. The paired images of the printed frames with and without the fittings show how cleanly the cutouts line up.
Printed to look the part
3D printing let us make a one-off panel in the exact size and layout the client wanted, without tooling up for a moulded plate. FDM printing keeps it quick and affordable, and the textured black finish gives it a clean, consistent surface that looks like a production fascia rather than a print. It is a neat example of using reverse engineering and 3D printing together to turn standard electrical parts into a bespoke fitting.
