This is a fuel filling lid we CNC machined in black POM-C for Roy Teo, a mechanical engineer at JFD. We made one sample first so Roy could check the fit, then six production lids once he approved it.

The brief

Roy had a finished design and sent it as a STEP file with a drawing. He did not need design help. He needed the part made exactly to his file, in black POM-C, and he wanted to check one real part before the full batch was made.

How we made it

We machined the lid from POM-C, also called acetal. It is stiff, holds its size well and stands up to fuel, and it machines to a clean, smooth finish, so the parts are left as they come off the machine with no coating.

Each lid has a fine thread cut right through its centre, two threaded ports in a flat side face, four bolt holes in the flange and a groove around the raised collar. All of it is cut in our workshop from the one program, so every lid matches the sample.

Sample first, then production

Roy approved the job at the end of July. The sample came first, so he could fit it and catch any problem while it would only cost one part. Once he signed it off, we machined the six production lids to the same program. The finished batch was ready about five weeks after the go-ahead.
