How 3D-Printed Signage Letters Are Designed and Made

A laser-cut acrylic backboard with 3D-printed letters standing proud of it, catching light on a chamfered edge, is one of the more involved builds we do: two processes, two materials, one finished piece. This guide is about what happens after you have decided on depth: how a 3D-printed or built-up sign actually gets designed, printed, finished and mounted.

When a sign needs to be 3D-printed

A flat, laser-cut letter covers most brand marks, and it is cheaper per unit at any volume. We reach for 3D printing instead once the design has depth: chamfered edges, curves, undercuts or sculptural form, the kind of thing a flat sheet cannot produce. Brand mascots, oversized 3D logos and feature signs with real relief all fall into this category. A common build is exactly the pairing above, a laser-cut acrylic backboard with 3D-printed dimensional letters mounted on top, so the flat panel does the branding and the printed letters do the depth.

Materials and finishing

For the printed letters themselves we use PLA, PETG, ABS, resin or SLS nylon, chosen for the size and detail the design needs, fine detail and smooth curves favour resin, larger or sturdier pieces favour PETG or ABS. Straight off the printer a part still shows layer lines, so it gets sanded, primed and either spray-painted or electroplated (chrome, gold or copper) before it ships, the same finishing line we run for trophies. For any acrylic backboard in the build, clear stock runs 3mm to 25mm thick, and we also stock coloured acrylic across the full Pantone range plus mirrored and metallic finishes. The file we need

For a printed letter or dimensional logo, send a 3D file (STEP, STL or OBJ). If there is a flat backboard in the build too, we also need a vector file (AI, EPS or PDF) for that part. Tell us the substrate (wall, glass or freestanding), the location (indoor or outdoor) and the rough size, and that is enough for us to confirm material and finish and return a price the same business day. If you only have a logo image and no 3D file, describe the depth you want and we can model it.

Mounting and installation

We pre-fit the mounting before delivery so on-site install is quick: stand-off hardware for the floating-letter look, freestanding bases, hanging hardware or a backlight box for lit signs. You can self-collect from the studio at 994 Bendemeer Road, #07-06, Singapore 339943 (Mon to Fri, 10:00 to 18:00), or we courier islandwide.

What it costs

3D-printed letters start from S$0.10 per gram on FDM, with SLA resin from S$0.30 per gram for smoother sculptural pieces, which typically works out to S$15 to S$40 per character depending on size. Finishing per hand-sized part: sand and primer S$15 to S$30, spray and topcoat S$30 to S$80, electroplate chrome or copper S$60 to S$100. If the build pairs a printed letter set with a laser-cut backboard, that adds from S$25 per A4 piece. Lead times

We quote within roughly 24 hours of receiving your file. Standard production runs 5 to 7 working days after the design is confirmed, and a build that pairs printed letters with a laser-cut backboard sits at the same 5 to 7 days since the two run in parallel. Budget 2 to 3 weeks for large identical runs, such as matching signs across a chain’s outlets.
