Air purifier lamp for Apollo Envirotec

An air purifier that doubles as a lamp for Apollo Envirotec: we designed the housing around its electronics and printed each prototype in our studio.

What we brought

  1. What we can do

Electronics designed in from the start

We placed the fan, master and slave PCBs, UVA and white LEDs and ioniser probes inside one printed housing.

  2. How we look after you

Drawn in full, tested in print

We drew every round in full and printed prototypes to test fit, light and locking before the next.

  3. What you get

A purifier that lights the room

The diamond lattice lets air through and, with the lamp on, spreads a pattern of light across the walls.

How we built it

The brief

Step 1 of 5

White light
6000 K
UVA light
385 nm wavelength
Fan
24 V DC filter fan with speed control
Ioniser
Built into the housing
RFID
A tag to identify each unit
Remote control
Range of 3 to 8 metres

At Additive Inn, our 3D printing studio in Singapore, we designed and 3D printed an air purifier that doubles as an ambient lamp for Apollo Envirotec, a company that combines environmental engineering with lighting. It had to clean the air and light the room.

Design and prototyping

Step 2 of 5

Each round was drawn in full, and we printed prototypes to test. The vents moved from hexagons to a diamond lattice that throws patterned light, and the last design stacks one, two or three modules high, with halves that nest for shipping.

  1. First design

One, two or three modules high.

  4. Diamond lattice · 16/08/2021

Diamond cut-outs replaced the hexagons, so the light inside casts a pattern across the walls.

Production

Step 3 of 5

We printed the housing halves, top covers and locking rings on our FDM printers: early fit tests in grey, and the lit prototypes in white.

Build and assembly

Step 4 of 5

We fitted the fan, LEDs and boards inside, then tuned how the parts join: the halves twist and lock with one hand, and magnets hold the top ring in place. We ran each prototype lit before handing it over.

The final build

Step 5 of 5

Apollo Envirotec got a working purifier and lamp in one: a white diamond lattice that draws air through the fan and, after dark, spreads a pattern of light across the room.
