- Grey and orange pieces, black trays
At Additive Inn, our 3D printing studio in Singapore, we made chess sets for McLaren. McLaren needed 135 matching sets built from a reference design, in grey and orange, with its name on every tray and a pocket for every piece.
Modelling the set
Step 2 of 5 · 19/09/2025
We modelled every part from the client's reference: flat pieces in two sizes for each colour, a tray with the McLaren name built into its rim, and a foam layout with a pocket for each of the 32 pieces.
Production
Step 3 of 5
We 3D printed the black trays and the boards, and made the pieces in grey and orange with the McLaren mark engraved on each. Printed jigs held the pieces in rows for finishing, and we laser-cut the foam inserts in sheets.
Checks and packing
Step 4 of 5 · 06/10/2025
We glued a foam insert into every tray, sorted the pieces by type, and filled each tray by hand, grey on one side and orange on the other, checking that every set was complete.
The final build
Step 5 of 5 · 10/10/2025
All 135 sets were packed and checked, each tray carrying the McLaren name in its rim and holding its 32 pieces firm in their foam pockets.
