The brief

Step 1 of 4

Starting point: A full 3D model of the locomotive

At Additive Inn, our 3D printing studio in Singapore, we built a model of the CO2 Rail concept train, printed in SLA resin, then primed and painted by hand. The locomotive started as a full 3D model.

Fabrication

Step 2 of 4

Each vehicle was printed as separate parts rather than one solid block: two bodies, four sets of running gear, the front pilot, two small tanks and a horn. Small parts printed on their own keep their fine detail.

Build and assembly

Step 3 of 4

The bodies were primed and painted by hand, with the solar panels picked out in black and white. Then the running gear, the pilot and the small fittings went on under each body.

The details

The realism lives in the running gear: bogies, end platforms with handrails and a placard, and the front pilot, each a separate print.
