This is a 150 mm figure we made for Slash UI: a man in a black vest and shorts with his fists up, standing on a black base with a raised back panel. The figure is SLA printed in resin and painted. The base is 3D printed in black PLA and holds the figure with magnets, so it lifts off by hand.

The brief

Slash UI's CEO, Amin Shariati, sent print-ready 3D files for the figure and a two-part base, and needed one finished piece for prototyping. Because the files came ready, there was no design stage. Our job was to print it, fit the magnets and put it together so it stands firmly.

How we made it

Slash UI approved the scope on 9 July and sent the files the next day. Printing started on 11 July. The figure came off the SLA printer in white ABS-like resin, which holds the fine detail of the face, hair and fingers. The base was printed in black PLA in two parts: a hexagon foot plate and an angled back panel that fits against it. Both have recessed slots for 25 x 6 x 3 mm magnets.

The figure was primed grey first, then airbrushed in our spray booth. The paint went through a few rounds. An early pass had fair hair, a later one a full grey beard, and the finished figure has grey hair with light stubble. The vest, shorts, shoes and watch are painted black, with the shoe soles picked out in grey.

The finished figure was photographed on 23 July, two weeks after the files arrived.
